Future Plans and Scope of Activities

The group was formally established in 1999 within the (previous) School of MIS. It is now a University Applied Research Group in the Knowledge and Information Management Department of the Faculty of Engineering and Computing.

Our aim is to develop existing research activities as well as initiate research in a number of new areas. Specific (but by no means exhaustive) examples include:

strengthening our unique expertise in the area of oncological research through the development of evolutionary computational models and robust image processing techniques

studying optimal methods of analysing uncertainty in medical data for classification purposes. Special emphasis is placed on analysing censored data

data mining and machine learning for the analysis of biological data

developing formal methods technology for the verification of safety-critical systems in biomedicine

development of multi-agent techniques for clinical/medical decision support systems

development, manufacturing and testing of biomedical ceramic implants

development of biomedical scaffolds for tissue engineering

micromanufacturing and medical product and device design

development of computer aided engineering (CAE) techniques in healthcare

enhancing the activities of the Knowledge Management in Healthcare subgroup
